Kiran has always had strong ties to the Nepalese community because of her heritage. She is half Nepalese. She was born in Nepal but came to the US was she was less than a year old. Her father is heavily involved with Nepalese affairs. Kiran has judged the pageant since its inception in 2011. She did an interview for a Nepalese TV station when she was still at CNN on the CNN set.

That being said, I'm guessing Kiran was invited to judge because, let's face it, how many prominent Nepolese personalities are there in the New York area. This was not work related. It's just Kiran being Kiran.

I wonder if Kiran is Buddhist?
