i disagree with the shadow theory. it's not at the right angle to be a shadow from her dress, and if you enlarge it, you can see the darker shadow of her dress higher up her thigh.

Well, thank you MelvinMoogleman for at least the glimmer of hope.

The skeptic in me says they're the bottom of her spanx, just because:
A) Barbara's been a pretty devout full pantyhose wearer for a few years now (mostly since she had her last kid and has thus really settled down her image), so stockings would be a huge turnaround, and
B) I think for the most part, news women are more and more careful about their wardrobe choices in matters like this due to the proliferation of HD technology

I do agree that it's not a shadow - you can see the shadow of her dress higher up her leg, as octob pointed out. And it does look like there's a funny sort of pull or catch on the side of her leg, right under the skirt hem...which could be a garter clip?

Either way, I'm thankful that you brought this possible catch to our attention, and hopefully Barbara teases us with something a little more concrete soon!
