You can't use a tuner card for CNN HD, HBO HD, etc if you want "true HD". ATI has an HD device/card that will let you get those channels but it requires Vista and you also have to get a cable card from the cable company for it to work. I'm not sure about any DRM protection (which Vista has) or if the final files can be shared, etc. http://ati.amd.com/products/tvwonderdigital/index.html

I use a program called capdvhs that captures HD from my HD cable box through a firewire connection. It works great and also has a scheduler. If you don't use the scheduler you have to be there live to use it (the dvr will not work with it).

For broadcast networks (abc, cbs, nbc, fox) you can just use an HD antenna that will work with a tv tuner card that has atsc support (most do).

I hope that helps.

It helps a lot, thanks.

Comcast locked the firewire connection on my cable box :x so I'll just stick with SD.

That's against FCC regulations. They must give you that support (so I've read). Comcast also has drivers out that you must have for it to work. It's an easy set-up. If for some reason they've blocked the port, go get another box.
