720x576 is an aspect ratio of 5:4. when an mpeg video is 720x576 and it tells the player that it has an aspect ratio of 16:9, the horizontal gets automatically stretched, but with avi, the aspect ratio is set by the actual size of the video meaning that people watching the clip will have to change the aspect ratio manually. When making 16:9 avi's, resize the picture to 1024x576, this will preserve the vertical and stretch the horizontal to give the desired aspect ratio.
