What kind of program do I need to rip DVD shows to being able to watch them on ipod?? Do they have to be converted first or does a program do that for you or what?

I use SmartRipper rip the DVDs (link can be found in the Software Resource Post). It is a free program and it works real well. It does not rip DVDs that have security features.

Once you rip the DVD, you'll have to convert it to the Ipod format (MP4). I have AVS Video Converter that can convert to MP4 but I have not tried it. You'll have to pay to get full features.

I would just open the DVD then copy the .vob files that have the vid you want to your computer hard drive. There's plenty of software that edits and converts to mp4. You could either use a lossless mpeg editor like VideoRedoPlus or Womble to edit the vids then convert to mp4, or some software can edit the files and export in mp4 in one step.

Here's a free converter.

I've got a videora ipod classic converter that works like a charm. I don't know if its the same thing as what you listed. So it looks like all I need to do now is copy the files to the harddrive then.

Thanks Rocky and Donkeed.
