Thanks! Do you have tips as far as codecs, settings, etc?

First of all, nice vid and thanks for sharing :bravo

Divx & Xvid seem to be popular choices. there's also Sorenson. VirtualDub can convert to all of these provided the codecs are already installed.

For quicktime conversions, I recommend the h.264, though results will vary depending on the software that is doing the conversion.
Here's my favorite - a solid, free program:

In general, you will get very good results with a bit rate in the 1500-3000 kbps range with any of the codecs mentioned. Bitrate is the biggest factor in the file's size - the lower the rate the smaller the file.
Another thing to consider is resizing to 1280 x 720, a happy medium as far as resolution goes.

Last but not least, here's the Tech Support Section of this forum:

I'm sure there's smarter people than I giving out recommendations there ;)

Right off the bad, when I try to open this mpg I get:

"MPEG Import Filter: invalid pack at position 3: marker bit not set;possibly MPEG-2 stream"

Any ideas?

Thank you again!

It sounds like you are using a version of v-dub that doesn't handle mpeg-2. Virtual Dub Mod is a version that will work with most mpeg-2.

Couldn't get divx through vdub working, so here's my attempt at h254. One is the clip from my first thread and the other is a tasty giade vid.

You probably had trouble with DivX because the profile you are using won't handle 1920x1080. 1080i profile can do up to 1920x1080 @30fps or 1280x720 at 60fps, but all others are much lower.

h.264 is a great and produces superior results compared to other codecs, but my only concern is with people being able to play back the files. VLC plays it, but people have to be constantly reminded. For every one person that has a problem and posts there will be several others. You can also use Xvid which has no restrictions, and it's free.

Are you removing the audio on purpose or are you having trouble?

Thanks for replying. Did you have a chance to peek at those two vids?

I didn't see a whole lot I could configure in divx. Most of the stuff was greyed out. Do I need the pro version?

As for audio, I see it as pointless for my needs. I like staring at the pretty ladies, not necessarily hearing their voices :)

Thank you again for your help.

Yes, I checked them out. Looks great. :Kool

You do need DivX pro to have access to a lot of the functions like resize and crop. Xvid is the good freeware alternative that produces similar results as it's commercial counterpart.

Also, if files size is a concern you might get better results if you lower the resolution down from 1920x1080. Looking at your vids you are encoding at around 5Mbps so I would shoot for 1280x720. For 1920x1080 I wouldn't go lower than 8Mbps to get great picture, but then your files will be large (smaller than original, but still large for an AVI) and encoding will take longer.

The bitrates are just my opinion so dabble around a bit, and see what results are best for you.

First off, thank you again.

Here's the same today show clip encoded with Divx and your suggestions. This cut the filesize in half, from the h264 version.

The DivX seems to play smoother. I've never had great results encoding a 1920x1080 AVI so I usually reduce the resolution to 1280x720.

Keep in mind the thing that will determine file size in the end is bitrate. You can have a 1920x1080 at 2Mps and a 720x480 at 5Mbps, and the 720x480 will be a larger file. Like I said you have dabble and see what quality vs. file size suits you best.

That all makes sense. I'll stick with divx and see what happens.

This is common sense but not everyone does it when converting.

If you're going to convert a video to .avi always look at the final output before uploading just to make sure it's in sync, doesn't get pixelated, etc...

When I use to convert I use to have to do the spanish vids multiple times since the bitrate wasn't high enough to make it decent quality.

The Divx looks right but i need audio in my movies that's why i prefer video over caps or it's like watching Harold Lloyd movies
