Which codecs should we have?

I usually don't like to install anything I don't need, to avoid instability problems. So I don't like to install large codec packages.

I've installed Windows Media Player, Quicktime and RealPlayer. I just assumed that would play most movies.

I also installed Divx 6.7. Do I need Xvid?

Do I need anything else?

Thanks

It's hard to say what you should have, but if you're missing codecs for vids, then here's a great site for finding free downloads.

Everyone should have FFDShow. It can decode practically anything (and decode it faster) and you can use various filters (sharpen, noise reduction, resize, etc.) in realtime. You can even use it to encode videos with a choice of a dozen different codecs. Go to that free-codecs site and get the latest version.

And the best media player is probably Media Player Classic. Very simple, low resource program.
