I just had a problem today where after a reboot and turning the external HD back on Win7 said it needed to scan the drive for errors and if it found any those files and folders would be moved.
After the scan I noticed my clips folder was empty and thought it was lost.
Turned out that the error checker moved the folder into a hidden folder.
The problem was Win7 said I did not have permission to access the folders.
Doing a search I found the answer to get back the files.

First you need to make sure that system folders are set to be shown and not hidden.

Next in windows 7 if you can find the folder in windows explorer,
right click the folder that is saying access denied
goto the security tab
Hit continue
select edit
select Add
type in everyone
hit ok
select everyone in the list
check mark all check boxes at the bottom
Hit ok
It will give everyone the rights to access the folder.

That worked for me.
