You can try VirtualDubMod.
Quality won't be as crisp as the original but it will still be good quality.

I have a Hauppauge Colossus video card and it captures nice video but the resulting files are massive. Is there good software that retains the quality but shrinks the file size? |

I was actually just about to post the exact same question. Just bought a Hauppage 1212 and I need something to trim these gigantic files. Also, are there 3rd party capture programs I can use instead of the software that came with it? If so, any recommendations? |

I think compression could be the answer. There's plenty of free software around the internet too. The more experienced people here could recommend some stuff in particular for you. I wish I could help more. |
