Post subject:  directv signal out in cold weather

i live right outside chicago and my signal seems to go out whenever it gets too cold...usually right around 10-15 degrees

sure enough, last night the signal was out (its 8 degrees at 530am) and rebooting the receiver and doing the same ole BS isnt doing a thing

i have been doing research and it seems people are split 50/50 on whether the cold is an actual issue

ive been with directv for about 5 yrs and havent had any issues other than when it gets this cold

anyone have similar problems? any suggestions?

i dont want to call only for them to tell me to go through the same mundane steps of rebooting...

Can you access your dish to check it out? Check your LNB's and all connections for water that may freeze and cause problems when it becomes too cold.

Donkeed,

I debated whether or not to post my concerns here, thanks for moving it

I can access the dish but I am not familiar with LNB's...pardon my dummyness, but what are those? Lines going into the dish?

If there is ice, I can clean it off, but what do you suggest if I don't see anything?

Actually I didn't move it, but it does belong here. :)

Anyways, LNB's are on the dish. The look like this.

See if there's any water swirling around the knobby part. Check any connections not just for ice and water, but to make sure they are secure, in good condition, etc.

Also, you may want to make sure the dish is aligned right. You can go to signal strength screen and move the dish around until you have peak signals on transponders (you may need another person around to do this). If it's signal loss on specific channels call directv to see which satellite it is for channels you're having problems with and check that.
