You should use one on anything that has a hard drive and absolutely must have for your computer. I have 3 of them. One on my work computer, one for the batcave DVR, and one for my desktop computer and capping setup of DVR and externals.

APC is good, but I'd go a little better than that. It's worth it in the long run. Here's a few good ones.

Are you only using it for you computer and external hard drive? If so the ones donkeed mentioned would be fine. Heck even the one for $100 would be good.
