Finally bought the HD PVR 5012. Well, it works pretty good. Sadly the Wintv doesn't work but the guy from Best Buy told me that already.. That's okay. I'll just put things on the dvr and record them later. This is the first video I did. Rather big since it's long and the highest quality(I think).

Do you mean the 1512? If so, that's the model I have and it works real well.

What I'd love to know is if there is some way to tell what the bitrate is on the programming coming from the cable box.

Good question. I'd actually like to know as well. That sounds really useful for those with capture devices. I'm not aware of any standalone software that does that, but tuners on the other hand do come with software that show channel bitrates.

Would love to figure out if there is a way to time some recordings. Like I could leave it on the channel but say I want "From 9-10 am" for example.

What's the software you're using? I would think that capture software should already have options for that already.

You're using WinTV v7, yes? According to the site, the 1512 comes with it. There is a recording scheduler in WinTV. Look in the settings menu (gear icon, lower left). You should be able to manually set the date, start and end time using it. Friendly reminder: Don't forget to leave your cable box set to the channel you want to record.

(FYI, I'm only reading the pdf manual right now because it's been a really long time since I used WinTV, but the interface and options appear to be the same as when I last used it. That's really the most help I can offer for that.)

I noticed Happauge has another capture software simply titled "Hauppauge Capture". Could it be that you're using that one? That one appears to be completely bare. I don't see any references to scheduling on that software.

I generally use Capture. The Wintv comes with it but it says that it can't find the tuner. I was told that Wintv wouldn't work with Comcast.

Remember, the 1512 is not a tuner. There should be a way to bypass that if it's asking for a tuner.

I'm looking at the pdf manual again. These are the instructions I'm looking at: http://hauppauge.lightpath.net/manuals/qi-wintv-hdpvr2_colossus.pdf

I'm guessing you got stuck at the channel lookup part of the install. That part of the install you should just skip. There really only needs to be one channel anyway, and that's usually channel 3 or 4 to connect your device.

The version on my CD is 2.6H, but it's from the original 1212 (HD-PVR 1).

I have an older Hauppauge PVR Model 1212 and Verizon FIOS HDTV. I get the PVR to get recorded videos to the computer fine. But the quality /resolution is not there. Maybe 10-12 years ago the quality would be to par not now.

Example Image

1. Do I need a newer PVR model?

2.Is the problem Verizon FIOS -reading other articles many complain Verizon does not want their transmissions recorded to high quality on purpose.
Is there maybe an app for a PC that can help w/ the Verizon issue?

Yep, that looks unusually fuzzy. Honestly, I have no idea what could be the issue as I don't have Verizon FIOS.

It's been a while since I've dealt with a 1212, and from what I remember it only has component and composite inputs. I'm currently using the Colossus 2 (literally an internal version of the HD PVR 2) which has both component and HDMI inputs. I've compared both and recordings through HDMI are significantly better, however I have to use an HDCP bypass device to make it work.

Having said that, I don't want you run out to the store and get an HD PVR 2 or Colossus 2 just yet! Create a separate post with your issue and hopefully more people will see. Hopefully someone here with FIOS can help you.

I typically make captures with DVD as the source of the captures. Now the disc player on my old laptop is having playback quality issues. I'm looking for a new program that I can use to make captures with DVD as the source material.

My new laptop doesn't have a disc player with it's own capture button like my old laptop. Thinking I need to install a second program that plays DVD that also has a capture button or option on my new laptop.

This might be slightly off-topic, but I mostly use DVD-R discs for shows that I want to archive.

But I read some links online about DVD+RW, so just in case if I record a show but stop it a few minutes into the show--it doesn't have to be permanent. I can record over it, similar to the old school VHS cassettes.

As long as you have the players to do it, you should be good to go. At least, that's what I have been noticing for several years.

Small update regarding my use of DVD+R disks:

Even though my unit says it is compatible, when I inserted the disk it says "Invalid Disc."

I used Verbatim, if anyone was curious to know.
So, would I need to look into DVD+R or continue sticking with the DVD-R?
