For the seventh time in the last eight seasons, the Minnesota Wild will be in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Wild needed a win to get in, and they got it--a 6-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks to become the third team to clinch a spot in the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs, joining fellow West Division teams Vegas and Colorado. So how did the Wild get into the playoffs? Many factors but one main one in the form of two words: Kirill Kaprisov.

Amazing how all of the attention centered on #1 overall draft pick Alexis Lafreniere, yet it's Minnesota's rookie turning heads this season. Kaprisov's 22 goals set a franchise record in goals scored by a rookie, and he's the overall points leader by a mile. Vast contributions have also come from players such as Jordan Greenway, Kevin Fiala, and Joel Eriksson Ek, while their defensive core is led by Jared Spurgeon and Jonas Brodin. Cam Talbot and Kaapo Kahkonen have each been valuable to the Wild in net, each boasting impressive save percentages, though one performance that stands out the most is Talbot's 50 save performance in a blowout out loss.

Oh, and one more thing: their Power Play has come alive in the last few weeks after being dead last all year. So already, there's only one spot left in the West Division after tonight, with the Coyotes and Blues being the main teams vying for that fourth place position.

The Carolina Hurricanes lost, 4-3, to the Dallas Stars in overtime last night, however, the one point they got for reaching OT was exactly what they needed to clinch a playoff spot. The Hurricanes are the fourth team to clinch a spot in this year's playoffs, and the first from the makeshift Central Division. Their playoff appearance comes due to having SEVEN players with 30+ points this season; the main leaders being Sebastian Aho and Vincent Trocheck. Dougie Hamilton is having an amazing bounceback season after last year was derailed due to injury--8 G, 31 A, 39 P. The 39 points are tied with Trocheck for second on the team.

Also, Carolina has an embarrassment of riches in net: Alex Nedeljkovic, Petr Mrazek, and James Reimer. Must be fun to have to choose between those three solid netminders. Canes have 69 points, which leads the Central--2 ahead of FLA and 3 ahead of TB.

On the flipside, the Detroit Red Wings were eliminated from playoff contention with Dallas and Nashville both winning last night. This is their fifth straight season without a postseason, though honestly, I see nothing but positives here. It does look like that with the way Columbus is playing, the Wings won't finish in last place. That's a positive. Plus, they did go on a recent and modest winning tear about a month ago, and went down swinging. That's another positive. They knew that they were not going to be in the playoffs, but Detroit didn't really play with that mentality. If they get some key FAs during the offseason, the Wings may contend for a spot deep in to next season, and could get back in within the next three seasons.

Two teams, two 7-4 wins, two playoff spots, one state. It was a double celebration for the state of Florida, as both of its teams--the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers--clinched playoff spots last night. For the Lightning, they officially earned the right to defend their championship and attempt to repeat, while the Panthers are rolling and having their best season (probably) ever.

For the Lightning, this achievement comes without their Hart Trophy winning forward, Nikita Kucherov, as he had been out all year due to undergoing hip surgery. Nevertheless, the team marched on and was led by Brayden Point (21-24-45) and Ondrej Palat (14-30-44), while Victor Hedman (9-35-44) makes a case for another Norris Trophy. Andrei Vasilevskiy has been a marvel at net; 29-8-1, 2.15 GAA, .927 SV%, and four shutouts. As for the Panthers, Jonathan Huberdeau (18-39-57) and Aleksander Barkov (24-28-52) have been the leader on that squad, which has had to deal with the recent injuries to Aaron Ekblad and Carter Verhaeghe, though they have a one-two punch in net in the form of Sergei Bobrovsky and Chris Driedger.

The Panthers and Lightning are 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the Central, meaning that we could see these teams face each other in the playoffs for the first time ever. Six spots have been clinched, leaving ten remaining, while only one remains in the Central.

Amazing how things work, isn't it? The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals entered their head-to-head game with each team looking to clinch a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Toronto Maple Leafs became the seventh team to clinch on the previous evening, winning 4-1 over the Montréal Canadiens after the Vancouver Canucks' 6-3 loss to the Ottawa Senators. This is the Leafs' fifth straight playoff appearance, but they have not won a playoff series since 2004.

As for the Penguins and Capitals, the New York Islanders' 4-0 win over the New York Rangers made things easier for both teams. The Capitals needed one point to clinch, the Penguins needed two, and with the Penguins up 4-3 in the third period, Tom Wilson tied it up with 15 seconds left in regulation, and when those final seconds ran out, the Capitals became the eighth team to clinch a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. In the OT, Jake Guentzel scored won the game for the Penguins, making them the ninth team to clinch.

The Capitals are in their seventh straight postseason, and they should get Alex Ovechkin back for the playoffs. As for the Penguins, this is their 15th straight playoff appearance, the longest current streak in not just the NHL, but in pro sports, and they will definitely get Evgeni Malkin back in time. So now, each of the four divisions has at least one team officially in the playoffs; the North has one, the East has two, and the Central and West have three each. Seven spots remain.
