Normally, I don't include seeds, but this hasn't been a normal year. We managed to make it through a 60-game season filled with drama and positive tests and seven-inning game doubleheaders. We are now into a modified 16-team postseason that will kick off with a best-of-three Wild Card Series, and one such series will feature the Tampa Bay Rays facing the Toronto Blue Jays. The Rays had a pretty good season last year, winning the Wild Card game and taking the Astros to the limit in the ALDS. This shortened season saw the Rays win 40 of the 60 games; an even 2/3 to capture the best record in the American League. All the while, the Jays engaged in a battle for second place with the Yankees, but ended up losing on the last day, sealing them at third place, but with the overall eighth seed in the AL. For the Jays, this is their first postseason appearance since 2015, when they reached the ALCS.

This looks like it'll be an unpredictable postseason, but I'll do my best to figure out who will win each of the eight WC series. Regarding this one, the best-of-three format will put all 16 teams on their toes, but I do thing TB will take it. Tampa Bay's on a roll sports-wise, they got Tom Brady, they could get the Stanley Cup (UPDATE: they did), and they're leading the AL. The WC Series will continue that roll.

Prediction: Rays in 3

The Oakland Athletics rebounded from their Wild Card Game defeat last year with an AL West crown, their first in seven years. They spent a good bit of the season dueling with the Chicago White Sox for the top seeds in the AL, but Chicago couldn't really last in a tight AL Central, as they ended up finishing third behind the Twins and Indians. Even so, the White Sox reached the postseason for the first time since 2008, doing so as the seventh seed in the American League, and behind heavy-duty hitting from Eloy Jimenez and Jose Abreu, as well as ace pitching from Dallas Keuchel and Lucas Giolito; the latter having pitched one of two no-nos from this season. However, with the series in Oakland, I can't really see Chicago making a dent in this go-around.

Prediction: A's sweep

As a lifelong White Sox fan, I have three concerns:

The health of Eloy Jiminez, after suffering a brief injury in Cleveland.
In recent history, the Sox start out hot when they bang the ball all over the yard and occasionally over the fence.
But the A's, as they have done--chip away and chip away.

Unlike the Yankees, they play small ball very efficiently and usually end up winning during their last at-bat.

The other concern is the bullpen--which has become a major issue since winning the 2005 World Series.

Unless another orange colored hue completely covers up what was the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, aka the Big O for Overstock.com, and Rickey Henderson Field--Gilottio and Keuchel have to do their part to keep the A's at bay.

And look out for that offense to hopefully continue what they have been doing (minus that season long six game winning streak.) 1 through 9, there is not any weakness as far as I could tell. And their approach with two strikes and their backs against the wall is something Oakland should be afraid of.

The big question, can Chicago sustain it at least through Games 1 and 2? If they don't, Dane Dunning, Dylan Cease, or Reynaldo Lopez would get the ball if is the series is split.

With any short series, as history tell us--it comes down to the little things that determine the outcome. This series, like a few others in the American League is too close to call.

For winning the AL Central, the Minnesota Twins also won a very important prize: avoiding the Yankees to start the postseason. A promising Twins season in 2019 ended with their usual Yankee purgatory, but they again captured the Central on the final day and avoided yet another matchup with their tormentors, and instead will face of against the defending American League Champions, the Houston Astros. Oh, the Astros. Where do I start? They were exposed as cheaters after it was uncovered that they used illegal tactics to win their 2017 championship, and it's assumed they did the same last season. The tricks of the trade were eliminated from their arsenal this season, and it resulted in a 29-31 season. However, that was good enough to finish second in the AL West, and the rule is, 2nd place teams are seeded 4-6 in each league. Go figure. This will be interesting. I see the Astros continuing to suffer with the concept of having to play by the rules, and bowing out early here.

Prediction: Twins in 3

The Yankees went a full calendar decade without winning a pennant. Though don't tell that sob story in Cleveland; even though they won a pennant in the 2010s (2016), they have the longest championship drought in baseball, having not won a World Series since 1948. These two teams are in a collision course with each other; the first playoff meeting since the 2017 ALDS, which the Yankees won after losing the first two games. A roller coaster season saw the Yankees finish in second place in the AL East; good enough for the fifth seed in the American League, while the Tribe fell just short of the AL Central crown. It's always fun when the Indians and Yankees clash in October, and it usually ends in the same fashion: Yankees win.

Prediction: Yankees in 3

After losing back-to-back pennants, the Los Angeles Dodgers racked up their biggest failure yet: a 106-win season wasted by an NLDS loss to the Washington Nationals. This year, they earned the best record in baseball and will face off against the Milwaukee Brewers in a rematch of the 2018 NLCS, which LA won in seven games. Now, this season has been a crapshoot and pretty much unpredictable. With that, I have good news and bad news for Dodgers fans. Bad news: Dodgers will get ousted by Milwaukee. Good news: this should result in Dave Roberts being fired.

Prediction: Brewers in 3

The more things change, the more they stay the same, at least mostly. The last time the Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds faced each other in the postseason was 1995, during the Braves' string of division titles. Braves won the NL East for the third straight year, and wouldn't you know it, they're facing the Reds. This is the Reds' first postseason appearance since 2013, and this unorthodox playoff berth puts them in the driver's seat for their first championship in 30 years. However, it will be difficult to take down what appears to be a strong Braves team on a mission.

Prediction: Braves sweep

The Miami Marlins ended the second-longest playoff drought in MLB; this was their first postseason appearance since 2003, and only their third appearance overall. And in a touch of deja vu, they are facing the Chicago Cubs. Now this Cubs team is a lot different from 17 years ago; for one, they're managed by David Ross, who helped the Cubs win the World Series four years prior. Instead of Wood, Prior, and Zambrano, they have Lester, Darvish, and Hendricks. And as for the Marlins, while they beat Derek Jeter in 2003, Jeter's now the team owner. Full circle. I really want to pick Miami to take this, but the Cubs still have a lot of fire power from that 2016 run. As a result, the Marlins will do something they have never done in their existence: lose a postseason series.

Prediction: Cubs in 3

One of the National League's hottest teams this year has to be the San Diego Padres; to think it all started with the Rangers complaining about Fernando Tatis, Jr's grand slam "breaking unwritten rules." The Padres served as a threat to the Dodgers for the NL West crown, but they ended up having to settle for second place and the National League's fourth seed, setting them up in a series against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cards are coming off being swept in last year's NLCS, and they are looking to get back on track and return to another World Series, though I can't see them getting past an immensely red hot Padres team.

Prediction: Padres in 3

Add to that playing all of those 7 inning doubleheaders. The Cardinals are going to be flat out exhausted, let alone having to travel 2 time zones to the west.

You're right--it looks great for the Padres.

And the Cubs are at home, weather predicted to be a true pitcher's delight. The Marlins would have to really mash the ball to hit one of those ads, let alone trying to maybe dent one of their LED boards.

But I don't see it happening. David Ross has it mostly figured out, Cubs will win in 2.

Say what you think but I see the Reds pitching stopping the Braves hitting. :Victory

Three home runs, Adam Engel of all people getting it all started. Later on, Jose Abreu and Nick Madrigal went yard.

Great game overall, although did a get tense late with Giolito being chased after becoming only the fifth pitcher in postseason history to record a no-hitter after 6 innings.

Three pitchers later, it was over. Onto Game 2 with former Houston Astros ace Dallas Keuchel on the mound. Hopefully, it will be just as fun as Tuesday was.
