It was announced earlier today that Seattle was officially awarded an NHL franchise, giving the NHL 32 teams, the same total as the NFL. Talks of the NHL in Seattle had been going on dating back to last year, and it was also revealed that Seattle will begin play in the 2021-22 NHL season, three years from now. The Arizona Coyotes will be placed in the Central Division to allow the Seattle franchise to be placed in the Pacific Division when they begin play. This will give the Vancouver Canucks a geographical rival, as Vancouver and Seattle are the two main cities in the Pacific Northwest. Seattle's most known hockey team was the Metropolitans, who were part of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association from 1915-1924, which included becoming the first American hockey team to win the Stanley Cup, doing so in 1917. This is the fourth NHL franchise to be established in the 21st century. The other three: the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild (2000-01), and the Vegas Golden Knights (2017-18). |

Happy for the folks in and around Seattle. I agree that the new franchise and Vancouver will establish a great rivalry over the years. |

With 32 teams at the start of the 2021-22 NHL Season, both the NHL Eastern Conference and the NHL Western Conference can be re-aligned with 4 divisions in each conference, 4 teams per division. NHL Eastern Conference - Atlantic, Central, Northeast, Southeast NHL Western Conference - Midwest, Northwest, Pacific, Southwest 8 teams from both conferences qualify for the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, the 4 division winners earn home-ice advantage. The top team in each conference earns home-ice advantage throughout the conference playoffs, the NHL Regular Season Champions earns home-ice advantage throughout the entire playoffs. |

Not quite the return of the Seattle SuperSonics (NBA) but if the owners are smart and aggressive about establishing a winner (see: Seattle Sounders, MLS, and Vegas Golden Knights, last season) you could hardly find a more passionate fan base. Congrats, Seattle!!! |
