Post subject:  Gayle Guyardo leaves WFLA Tampa

Gayle has left WFLA today for health reasons. Basically her voice is going and is resting her vocal chords, she mentioned that she's had problems speaking for the last three years and has made the decision to no longer present newscasts.

Thanks Sparty for pointing out my earlier post. I think it was when they expanded from 7 to 9 when her voice went south. Those two extra hours hurt her. The scary part she probably won't be the only one. I think Fox 13 was the ones who started it with two sets of anchors a while back and then they got cheap and only had one anchor team. Then WFLA expanding to two hours from another channel and then ABC Action News has their morning team go from 4:30 to 10 AM (seriously). From 7 AM to 10 AM, they stream online. Then 10 AM to 4 PM Lauren St. Germain and Shay Ryan are on. That's a long time to be on the air. Either execs would need to hire more people or prepare for a revolving door of talent every year or so. I don't know if other stations in other markets do this.

It's credit to Lauren and Shay that when they anchor their final bulletin on the linear WFTS channel at 3pm that they still look and sound fresh when they present that newscast to more people than watch them on the Action News website throughout the day.

It's all about the $$$$ at the end of the day for these networks as it's cheaper to use your on-air staff to repeat the same stuff than it is to schedule syndicated programming to fill the time instead.

I'm sure Gayle would still be there next week if Channel 8 split the shifts instead of making them anchor all morning.

Actually Mphillp, Gayle will have take months off (doctor's orders). Plus, she might want to spend the summer with her family (four kids). If she does decide to come back, I said maybe around August when her kids go back to school. One hand, I wouldn't blame if she stays retired. She did spend over 30 years in the biz which is rare. Another hand, she actually retired about a decade earlier to do infomercials but cross in between doing as much work there as she was on at WFLA to having her studios where WFLA is and her boss telling her the door is open and came back. I said her chances of coming back are 50-50. Probably as a contributor at a station, local Talk Show host, or has a podcast. I doubt she'll come back to TV news maybe if the schedule is favorable to her but again maybe. IF ABC Action News is smart, they should cut down the time of not only Lauren and Shay but the morning crew as well. Also, Sparty, 4:30 AM to noon? That's a long time, I hope they use different anchors and not use the same time for 7 and a half hours. Also, I wonder who WFLA will replace Gayle on the morning show. Will they go in-house or hire someone new? I'm guessing someone new though probably start having in-house have the job temporary. Just hope they don't make us wait 18 months to find a replacement like 10 News did.

That's a surprise because Avery left herself three months earlier to spend time with her family. Wonder if this was planned or just WFLA needed/wanted a familiar face to take over. Also, kind of surprise they didn't get the job to Victoria Price who sometimes anchors the 8 PM Newshour.
