The word “famed” is what throws me off, most of the usual suspects I would hardly call “famed”

It's got to be someone who left NBC in 2012. That should limit who could it be.

As far as the news division/Today Show goes, there's really only 2 people that closely fit --
One is Ann Curry, who left her anchor position near the end of June 2012 in that whole debacle that seemed she was forced out.
The only problem is the person is described as having "left NBC in 2012" --
Ann only departed from Today, but stayed under contract with NBC for close to 2 more years, contributing stories to NBC News, the Today Show, and
producing a few specials for MSNBC.

That leaves only one person I can think of -- Amy Robach. Less than 2 months before the Ann Curry mess, Amy jumped from Today to Good Morning America,
fully severing ties to NBC in May.

One of the unconfirmed rumors is that Ann had been confided in by someone, and took her concerns to Today & NBC hierarchy and was completely shut down over it.
Within weeks, she was on her own way out of Today, getting literally "kissed goodbye" on air by Lauer.

There's more detail here, mentions of feeling like a "piece of meat", and being forced to sign non-disclosure agreements :

This was almost certainly someone he was in close proximity to on a weekly basis, not some random NBC personality.

I realize this doesn't mean much, but I couldn't help noticing this candid press shot of Amy from outside at 30 Rock, between segments of Today.
She almost looks dejected or distracted somehow.... More power to her for leaving - regardless if she was involved or not.
