It's in the story link -- 1972-1992 is mainly what they're using, because as you said, there's only a handful of his 1960s shows available... NBC had a practice back then of re-using tapes, effectively erasing programs all the time, especially for shows that were daily, like his. . |

NBC had a practice back then of re-using tapes, effectively erasing programs all the time, especially for shows that were daily, like his. I heard Carson was furious when he found out about it. He even offered to pay out of his own pockets to store the tapes himself, but NBC refused. Video tape was still in its infancy at the time, so networks would either wipe them for reuse or destroy them to save on storage space. It's a damn shame what those practices did to what turned out to be a lot of television history. (Ask your local Doctor Who fan for more information.) Nevertheless, I thought I had no more reason to watch late night television once Letterman left the air. Now I'm wrong! |

Man can't believe NBC execs said no especially Carson offered to pay them. Guessing HSF you're not into the Comedy Central shows. |

I used to watch Comedy Centray all the time (more so during its previous Comedy Channel days), but I now haven't watched it in a decade. It used to be a mainstay on my dial due to MST3K, South Park, SNL and MAD TV, and I would also watch both the Kilborn and Stewart versions of TDS, but I guess I just lost interest in the network as a whole after a while. I also should say that I haven't completely ditched late night television, as I usually watch the last half of Seth Meyers after I come home from work, but that's about it. Perhaps my dissatisfaction was that Letterman was pulled completely after his final show, and it seemed weird to me that CBS reverted to "crime time after prime time" in his slot. |

Now that Dave is gone, the era of late night talk show viewing is officially over for me. I'm not a fan of any of the current hosts. I'll still be on the look out for hot leggy guests, but that's about it. |
