1972-1992 is mainly what they're using, because as you said, there's only a handful of his
1960s shows available... NBC had a practice back then of re-using tapes, effectively erasing
programs all the time, especially for shows that were daily, like his.
I heard Carson was furious when he found out about it. He even offered to pay out of his own pockets to store the tapes himself, but NBC refused.
Video tape was still in its infancy at the time, so networks would either wipe them for reuse or destroy them to save on storage space. It's a damn shame what those practices did to what turned out to be a lot of television history. (Ask your local Doctor Who fan for more information.)
Nevertheless, I thought I had no more reason to watch late night television once Letterman left the air. Now I'm wrong!
