Home Shopping Network Going HD In 2009
The network is talking with cable and satellite operators.


Washington, D.C. (May 23, 2008) -- HSN, formerly known as the Home Shopping Network, will launch a high-def simulcast channel in 2009, TV Week reports.

Rival shopping network QVC launched a HD simulcast channel this month, although no large cable or satellite provider is now carrying it; it's available on some small cable systems.

TV Week writes that both QVC and HSN are now discussing terms with the cable and satellite operators. QVC officials tell the publication that it expects major carriage deals by year's end.

While QVC and HSN have a strong audience base, most cable and satellite operators now have system space limitations which prevent them from adding more high-def channels.

Andy Shelton, senior vice president of television for HSN, says the network has spent "multimillions" to upgrade its seven studios for the HD switch. But he said the investment is necessary and inevitable.

“Once you’ve heard a CD, the likelihood of going back to vinyl is pretty slim,” Sheldon told TV Week. “The same thing will happen from analog to digital to HD.”

The publication says the two shopping channels will use HD to seek upscale advertisers and viewers.

“It may allow us to appeal to a slightly different audience and expand exposure to a different base of people,” a QVC official said. “We’re hoping a clearer picture may make it easier for people to make decisions about certain products.”

I'd like to know what upscale advertisers and viewers! :hum

I think the demographics will not change not matter how great the picture looks. Except that Kimberly-Clark will see an uptick in Kleenex Tissue sales. :oops: :Joker :jetserl
