The most current version of VLC plays almost anything. Let me know if it doesn't work, and I'll download that and try to find a codec solution.

According to GSpot, this file contains an H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video stream, a relatively recent thing, I suppose. The 4-letter codec is listed as avc1. I am able to play it with good ol' VLC (1.0.3 Goldeneye, far from the latest, on purpose), Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center; although, strangely enough, not with Media Player Classic - Home Cinema.

It sounds like your version of K-Lite codec pack is either not current enough or does not support that combination. (Only K-Lite Full has any support for H.264 to begin with; Basic and Standard don't.) I'd recommend that you download and install free K-Lite Mega Codec Pack to play this and most other multimedia files with a player of your choice.

Are you getting an error message or is it freezing up?

So, it sounds like you get some normal video and audio playback initially ("stops in between")... for how long? If so -- even for a few seconds -- that wouldn't be a codec issue. Two possible causes are 1) hardware limitations or 2) (not likely but...) a corrupt downloaded file.

Hardware: are you able to play other full HD 1080i files without any trouble on that PC? If you're not sure, what's the PC model and/or age?

Corrupt file: when you highlight that file in Windows Explorer, does it show the correct Length (00:12:54), among other attributes? And is the file size (right click - Properties) shown as 799 MB (837,983,602 bytes)?

neat question and yes.. i have upgraded my mother board as well as my ram upto 3 gb.. and i can play full hd 1080i files.. when i check the properties.. it shows as 799 MB (837,983,602 bytes).

btw.. i have tested this in my lab.. with an high end pc even there it is causing problems..

Well, in that case, in the spirit of "sometimes the best way to fit a round hole is to use a square peg," here's that full show:

349 MB | XviD MPEG-4 | 624x352 | 43:06
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=M99MFHHS

Not HD, obviously, but, as a bonus, you get to see Katherine Heigl on the couch from different / sometimes better angles than her own segment, plus her body language / interactions with some dude.

I'm stumped. The only thing I can think of is Windows can be quirky. Do you have UPS for your computer? Sometime power outages or crashes can cause programs and codecs to behave oddly. I had codec issues with computers in the past the past that I had to fix by uninstalling, changing the registry, and then reinstalling. Sometimes even that didn't fix it. Not saying that you need to do this, but I like to reinstall the OS every 3-4 years on a computer that I use regularly. You'll get that new new computer smell once again with your old machine. OK, maybe not, but it will run like new. :)

I installed smplayer a while ago.. it never failed to play any type of media
it's superior to vlc in my opinion 'the only negative thing about it..it doesn't have a snapshot button like vlc' other than that it's the best freeware player ever :Thumb

Don't forget that mp4 is a Quicktime vid format. Try using Apple Quicktime which will work in Windows. :Kool

Just for the hell of it, download and install quicktime. Once you have installed it restart your computer then try using VLC and see if that will work for you.

If you still having trouble playing that mysterious file.. i suggest converting it to xvid
I use Xilisoft which is fast and simple, the loss in video quality is not very noticable.

Why would he or anyone else want to invest time and energy doing that, when the entire show has already been posted above... in XviD, as it were?

Because it will not use H.264 while converting ;) wouldn't hurt right? plus it takes less than 8 minutes
