Okay here's the deal:
My family gets me a DVD-ROM for Christmas but so far we have not been able to play anything on it because we have not found any inexpensive (or free) ways to play DVDs on the computer.
Any ideas?

Do you have a DVD burner as well as this DVD-ROM? :hum

If not, then you'll have to go to Blockbuster to rent DVDs to play on it. :?

Since it can burn, you really have a DVD R/RW. A DVD-ROM would only play DVDs.

Since you can burn DVDs, you should have a DVD playing/burning program. The most popularly distributed program is Nero. To get started....

You'll need to get some DVDs to burn onto. I use Memorex DVD+R to save files (like all of the clips I download from here) as data and DVD-R to create DVDs to play on a regular DVD player attached to a TV or a DVD-ROM player on a computer.

What can I burn to a DVD to play as a DVD? Anything you want! Pick something and go through the program to create the DVD. If this is your first time creating a DVD, start small until you get the hang of doing it. Don't worry about wasting a disk. You can get them cheap if you get them on sale. :Kool

I hope this helps. :D

I don't care about copying movies or videos (even though I'm able to do so)

I just want to play a DVD. What programs/decoders/players do I need for simply doing that?

edit:
While I'm at it, what's a good video capture card?
Not TV tuner. I have no interest in recording videos. I just want to get stuff from my old VHS tapes onto a site to share with ya all.
I have about 3-4 years worth of stuff that I can share.

To play a DVD, the program that came with your unit should be just fine for doing that provided that you loaded the software onto your computer.

As far as the tuner goes, I'll default to the experts here. I do my cappping differently than what you want to achieve. :Kool

I may be thinkg of something else, but you are saying DVD-Rom. Do you mean DVD-Ram ? If so, good luck.

There are all sorts of programs to copy movies to DVDs. But if it's protected, look up DVD 43, It's a small download and free, get the latest version and once you install it, reboot your compter.

If this is not what you need, there are sites out there that helps people for any problem. Just do a search on (play DVDs on the computer) you had it in you post. ;)
