Maybe I'm just missing something simple, but I'm having issues making split files that I've made play in VLC.

I used HJ-Split to split this file into 100MB parts to upload, but I'd like them to play individually like I've seen other posters do. I have downloaded and played others' clips individually, so I have these file types associated with VLC in Windows. When I opened the folder, some of the parts had the VLC icon, others didn't:

In any case, none of these files will play individually, not even the ones with the VLC icon. Part .001 plays a few frames, then I get a static image and no audio, although the progress tracker moves to the end. Parts .002 and .004 just play with a blank screen and no audio. I went and manually set the "unknown application" parts to play in VLC, and they all play with a blank screen and no audio as well.

The first time I got this result, I deleted them and redid the split, just to rule out it being an anomaly. I got the same exact results the second time.

That's because they're split files. They're not supposed to play individually only when joined to make one file.

You could use software like WOMBLE where you would split the file into chunks and save each one as there own MPEG. Then, they would play individually.

Playing parts with VLC isn't perfect. I've had issues with certain parts not playing, but they join up fine if you have all the parts. It's strange that none of the parts will play.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'll probably just post it with a disclaimer then

For now, I'll just stick to doing edited avi's for a smaller download option :Kool

I hate HJ and RAR clips because you need all to play it
So my favorite way is to split the mpeg with VideoRedo then do frame advance and split again till you get all your parts
then when i join it back i get a perfect join with womble :D
But my avi splitter does not split exact on a frame :(

After splitting the file, if you drop the .001 or add .mpg to the file name, it'll play by itself. :Kool

I did some tests with the HJSplit parts you recently uploaded, impala101. With VLC I got some of them to play, but most of them didn't. I got ALL of them to play with Media Player Classic (free) and Nero Showtime (part of Nero 7 (not free). :Kool

Try MP Classic with the parts and see if that works.
