Post subject:  Attention DirecTV subscribers who use Hauppauge HD-PVR

Since very few people read the Tech Support forum, I'll put this here. Overnight, when I recorded Red Eye, about 16 minutes into the recording, I got this message;

Earlier in the week it was only doing it on Disney-owned channels. I fixed it by taking the HDMI cable out of my receiver and plugging it in to my upscaling DVD player. It seems that now you can't have it both ways if you want to watch TV and make a recording or cap at the same time. The only caps from this morning will be from that truncated Red Eye. I do have Robin set to record at 10:00 CT. It doesn't even flash that message on Disney-owned channels now.

Your DTV receiver should have an HDMI out and Component out. Run the Component out from the DTV receiver to the Component IN on the Hauppauge. Run the HDMI out from the DTV to your HDMI in on your TV. Should be no problem…

It's an HDCP problem.

Yes, one solution they want you to accept is to downgrade from digital (HDMI) to analog (component) signal path.

Profit over quality... surprise.

Another, 100% digital, solution is to plug in a common ~$25 HDMI 1x2 splitter like this, a perennial Amazon bestseller... I wonder why.

Satellite or digital cable or FIOS (or whatever) receiver / DVR HDMI Out --> splitter HDMI In

Splitter HDMI Out 1 --> Hauppauge HD PVR 2 (or whatever) HDMI In

Splitter HDMI Out 2 --> TV (or whatever) HDMI In

Done.

its not just dtv issues is dmca thing. its the same thing with using a sling player and dvr'g content. using hdmi allows for dig recording on the content so some broadcasters will encrypt it when using that connection. ABC Family is a big one or maybe its just PLL that my wife has issues with on the sling player.

switch to component if that option is available, running the out to the sling using comp has no problems with streaming the content.

Yeah, do this. It strips the HDCP from the signal and lets you record anything you want. Works a charm.

If I used the splitter on my cable box and ran HDMI to my tv and the other to my laptop HDMI in port what do I need to be able to record the show on my laptop and make caps?

To help decide what to get, chris217 has put together a handy guide:

For a laptop (as opposed to a desktop), you'll need to get an external device like Hauppauge HD PVR 2, around $150 online.

Software is included. Just to give you a quick visual, here's what its capture tab looks like on my screen:

Yep, lateapex is correct: HDCP issue.

The simple solution: Use the component (red-green-blue) cables for analog video, and you'll need composite (red-white) cables for analog audio. Alternatively, you can use a toslink cable for digital audio if your satellite box has it.

Or you can follow lateapex's digital solution.

OK, since enough people have seen this topic, I'll move it back to the tech forum for others to see.

I hope somebody reads it here. I have the old 1212 so the HD-PVR went to the Y/Pr/PB inputs and the HDMI was to the TV. Had no problems with that connection until Wednesday when I was recording Red Eye.

Went searching for your issue. Found this: http://blog.solidsignal.com/content.php ... t-channels (It was posted just a little over a month ago.)

In short, DirecTV is encrypting some of your channels to prevent people from exploiting the analog loophole/non-HDCP signals to record shows. I know the article is talking specifically about Disney-owned networks, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not happening on other networks as well, as it is in your case.

So I'd suggest following the advice from lateapex and epictimewaster above and buy a device to bypass HDCP.

Regarding audio can the Hauppage PVR 2 direct stream copy Dolby 5.1? Have SF Giants world series games I'd like to save in HD instead of onto dvd resolution.

Thanks for the suggestion of the HDMI splitter. I just got it today and it's allowing me to record to the Happague Colossus (internal HD PVR) via HDMI from the cable box.
