With a tuner card you will only be able to get the local Digital channels
because the rest are encrypted

Yep, only locals and PBS with a tuner. You don't need even need a box for those with Fios. Just plug the coax right from the wall into the tuner and scan for QAM channels.

I have a Fusion Gold, and 7 series is Vista Compatible. I use Fusion 5 PCI and Fusion 7 with XP. I think Ice uses it with Vista so maybe ask him as well about possible quirks. Other than the recording software, I have no complaints with the card.

BTW, that Hauppauge PVR Cobra mentioned is great. I liken to a VCR that can record in HD resolution. The only negatives are the uneditable h.264 transport stream files it records and it's max 13.5Mbps capability. It comes with a converter that you can make WMV or if you want AVI's there's freeware that works with the video.

You're using OTA to capture right? Will you be able to use your tuner card after June 12? The Hauppauge sounds great because it has component jacks which can carry an HD signal. But i would like to edit my videos. Are there any other tuner cards that have component jacks and allow to you edit.

I'm recording OTA and QAM from fios, and it will still work after the digital conversion except the analog channels which are crap anyways.

The only cards I know about with component input are for professionals and all cost over $5K. Not exactly worth it for capping.

There is software to make rough cuts with the transport stream h.264, but my experience with those hasn't been pleasant. I just convert them to AVI then work with those. MediaCoder works with the 720p. HandBrake is a converter that works with the 1080i (thanks to Sceptrex42 for telling me about that one).

Don't worry if you can't play it because the software it comes with has the proper codecs and player to play it perfectly. You could also use ArcSoft Video Decoder filter with MP Classic to get it to play.
