Post subject:  Re: 2021 NHL Standings Thread

Of course, this is old news, but the Montréal Canadiens fired both Claude Juilen and Kirk Muller as head coach and assistant coach, respectively, following their shootout loss to the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday. Julien, who coached the Boston Bruins to the Stanley Cup in the 2010-11 season, was in his second stint as Canadiens coach, with his only playoff appearance being last year's modified 24-team tournament. The Canadiens, who entered the playoffs with a .500 point percentage, served as the Eastern Conference's 12th seed and upset the Pittsburgh Penguins in the qualifiers before losing the East Quarters in six to the Philadelphia Flyers. It was during that series that Muller assumed head coaching duties after Game One, as Julien suffered chest pains.

The firing came after the Canadiens lost six of eight, and suffered their third loss this season to a lowly Senators team. Despite this, the Canadiens remained in a playoff position, standing at fourth place in the North Division. Dominique Ducharme was named the interim head coach, with Thursday being his first game--a 6-3 loss to the Winnipeg Jets after the Canadiens led 3-1, bringing their skid to seven losses in their last nine games.

Another coach gets the boot, and it's another one in the North/Canadian Division. Right after their 7-3 win over the Ottawa Senators, the Calgary Flames fired Geoff Ward as their head coach. Ward took over for Bill Peters, who was let go after allegations of racism and assault were uncovered, early in the 2019-20 season. At the time Ward took over, the Flames were 12-12-4 with 28 points in 28 games, but in the 42 games played before the COVID-19 pause, the Flames went 24-15-3.

Calgary's .564 points percentage was enough for them to finish in the top 12 in the Western Conference, putting them in the Stanley Cup Playoffs as the #8 seed. They defeated the Winnipeg Jets in the Qualifying Round (four games), but fell to the Dallas Stars in the West Quarters (six games); a series known for the Flames being just 10 seconds away from taking a 3-1 series lead, only to give up a game tying goal and lose in OT, and later lose Games Five and Six (the latter by going up 3-0 only to give up seven unanswered goals).

Ward's firing comes after a .500 start (11-11-2) to this season, with the Flames (at the moment) at fifth place in the North/Canadian Division. They are two points behind the only other team to fire a coach this season: the Montréal Canadiens. Darryl Sutter will serve as the interim coach; he coached the Flames to the Stanley Cup Final in 2004.
