The teams ranked 5-12 in their conference will play in a best-of-five Qualifying Round series to determine the other half of the NHL's Sweet 16. Now because they were surpassed by a red-hot Flyers team, the Penguins are one of the teams who have to, as the saying goes, kill or be killed. Now there is one benefit: Jake Guentzel, who had been sidelined pretty much all season, is back and healthy. So he'll join Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in Toronto (where the East games up to the end of Round 2 will take place). A major complaint about this format is that it allows teams who have no business being in the playoffs. The Montréal Canadiens are one of those teams. To say they've been sputtering all season would be an understatement. Not one, but TWO eight game losing streaks, and they couldn't even beat the Red Wings--one of the lottery teams this season. But they had just enough of an adequate season to finish above the modified playoff line, and they could pull off a massive upset. I said they could; I didn't say they would.
Prediction: Penguins in 5
#1

Canadiens 3, Penguins 2 (OT)
Jeff Petry scores 13:57 into OT, giving the Habs a stunning a shocking victory over the Pens in Game One.

Penguins 3, Canadiens 1
Sidney Crosby, Matt Murray, and the Penguins rebound from the OT loss to even series.

Canadiens 4, Penguins 3
Canadiens come back from 3-1 down, and for the second time in this series, Jeff Petry is the difference maker.

Canadiens 2, Penguins 0
Lehkonen and Weber score late in the third, Carey Price shuts the door, twelfth-seeded Canadiens eliminate Penguins on Sidney Crosby's birthday.
NOTE: While this continues Pittsburgh's playoff streak, it marks the first time since the 2005-06 season that the Penguins will not be in the traditional 16-team Stanley Cup Playoffs.
