Nine days after the NHL announced their plan to return, the NBA's plan was approved by a 29-1 vote--the one being the Portland Trail Blazers. The plan is as follows:
The NBA's plan is nearly similar to the NHL, only the NBA's format involves 22 teams: 13 from the Western Conference and 9 from the Eastern Conference due to win percentage entering the pause following March 11's games. The qualifying teams are:
Eastern Conference
1. Milwaukee 2. Toronto 3. Boston 4. Miami 5. Indiana 6. Philadelphia 7. Brooklyn 8. Orlando 9. Washington
Western Conference
1. L.A. Lakers 2. L.A. Clippers 3. Denver 4. Utah 5. Oklahoma City 6. Houston 7. Dallas 8. Memphis 9. Portland 10. New Orleans 11. Sacramento 12. San Antonio 13. Phoenix
The reason why the West has more than the East: there is a six game difference in the standings between the 8 seed and the 13 seed. In the East, only the Wizards are really close to the #8 seed.
Each of the 22 teams will play eight "seeding games" that will conclude the 2019-20 regular season. At the end of the seeding games, the top seven teams in each conference will automatically qualify for the 2020 NBA Playoffs. Regarding the eighth and final spot in each conference, if #8 leads #9 by more than four games, then #8 is automatically in. However, if #8 leads #9 by four games or less, then the two teams will face each other in a (possibly) two-game mini-tournament to determine the final spot in the conference playoffs. The #9 seed has to win both games to qualify, while the #8 seed only has to win one of the two games. This will be followed by the traditional conference-based 16-team playoffs, consisting of all best-of-seven series.
The tentative date for the NBA's return is July 31, with the NBA Finals ending no later than October 12. The eight teams who are not part of the restart will be part of the draft lottery, and will be joined by the six teams who are eliminated during the restart. All of the games will be played at Walt Disney World Resort.
