The Senators had two slots in the lottery because of the Erik Karlsson trade, but they failed to get #1. As the order shows, the #1 overall pick will go to a losing team from the upcoming Qualifying Round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, meaning that 16 teams could be playing for that prestigious pick. The eight eliminated teams from the Qualifying Round will be in the running for #1, with each team having an equal 12.5% chance. The other seven will have picks #9-#15, with the final 16 opening round picks going to the Qualifying Round winners and the Round Robin teams.
