Earlier today, the Buffalo Sabres lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-2, in regulation, and as a result, they became the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention in this shortened 2020-21 season. The elimination comes with 12 games left in their season, and it adds to their league-long playoff drought. It is now a full decade; 10 straight seasons without a playoff appearance. Until a few years ago, Buffalo was the owners of not only the NFL's longest playoff drought, but the longest in pro sports. The Bills ended that drought in 2017 and are currently a powerhouse in the AFC, but that leaves the Sabres as an immensely unlucky team.

So what caused this elimination? The 18 straight losses (which tied an NHL record) certainly played a role. Even so, this whole season has seen lethargic play from a lot of its big names, with a lack of offense from Taylor Hall and Jeff Skinner, and horrendous plus-minuses from Victor Olofsson and (especially) Rasmus Dahlin. The team finally fired Ralph Krueger during the drought, but that wasn't enough, the team was dead. So dead, in fact, that they traded Taylor Hall for peanuts to the Bruins; basically giving in to an unhappy Hall's request to play for Boston. Hall had two goals total as a Sabre this season; he scored that many goals in his first two games as a Bruin.

Though the team's season is now officially over instead of figuratively since, well, it started, it does come with a positive note. Since losing 18 straight, the Sabres went 5-3-2 in the 10 games played afterwards. So that's pretty good.

Tonight saw a second elimination from playoff contention, as the New Jersey Devils saw their season officially come to an end. A combination of the Bruins' 2-0 win and their own loss to the Penguins resulted in the Devils being eliminated, though they nearly came back from down 6-0 after two periods. The Devils last reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2012; in the nine seasons that have passed since then, they've only made the playoffs once (2017-18). So what factors led to their elimination?

One key factor was their inability to defeat the only other eliminated team (as of now), the Buffalo Sabres. They have some good talent in the form of Jack Hughes, Miles Wood, and Yegor Sharangovich, as well as a pair of good goalies in Mackenzie Blackwood and Scott Wedgewood. The problem: the East Division is full of heavyweights, and they just couldn't stack up against them. It's why they traded Travis Zajac and Kyle Palmieri to the Islanders prior to the deadline. Another factor: P.K. Subban has still yet to regain his Norris candidate form since being traded to the Devils from Nashville.

Not only is this the second of 15 inevitable eliminations, but both of them have come from the East Division. At the moment, the Capitals, Islanders, Penguins, and Bruins sit above the playoff line, while the Rangers and Flyers remain in the bubble.

The Vegas Golden Knights became the first team to clinch a playoff spot this season, with their 5-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks being more than enough to put them in the Sweet 16 (VGK needed just one point to clinch). Tonight's win was their eighth straight, and they moved into first place in the West Division over a Colorado Avalanche team that will come off a brief COVID pause tomorrow. The Knights remain perfect as far as playoff appearances; four seasons of existence, four postseasons.

So what were the factors in Vegas' latest playoff appearance? One simple factor: M&M--Mark and Max. Mark Stone and Max Pacioretty led the way all season; Stone's 35 helpers and 53 points lead the team, while Pacioretty leads the team in goals with 22. Shea Theodore serves as Vegas' top offensive D-Man (6 G & 32 A; 38 P), while players such as Jonathan Marchessault, William Karlsson, and Alex Tuch have been key as well. Marc-Andre Fleury has returned to the form he had when he was winning Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh; as of this post, Fleury has a 21-10-0 record, with a GAA of 2.08 and a SV% of .926. He is in the Vezina category along with Philipp Grubauer (COL) and defending Stanley Cup Champion Andrei Vasilevskiy (TB).

Three playoff spots remain in the West Division, and the Knights will most likely spend the rest of the regular season contending against the Avalanche for the top spot in the West Division.

For the fourth straight season, the Colorado Avalanche are playoff bound. The Avs became the 2nd team to lock in a playoff spot, doing so by defeating the St. Louis Blues, 4-2, in the team's first game back since our brief COVID pause. So how did the Avalanche return to the playoffs? Here's how.

First off, one regulation loss in our last 20 games. TWENTY. Overall, 20-3-3 since March 1. To the surprise of no one, the top line of Gabriel Landeskog, Nathan MacKinnon, and Mikko Rantanen have led the way for the Avs, especially Rantanen, whose 26 goals lead the team. MacKinnon's 56 points serve as the top total on the Avalanche, and the trio has been helped out by a strong second line consisting of Nazem Kadri, Andre Burakovsky, and Brandon Saad. Another big help has come in the form of Joonas Donskoi, who has put 15 in the net this season, and amazing offensive defensemen in Cale Makar and Samuel Girard. Philipp Grubauer is having an amazing season; 25-8-1, a GAA of 2 even, a .920 SV%, and five shutouts.

The Avalanche enter the season as heavy Cup favorites this year due to our depth and offseason acquisitions, and at this moment, we are certainly playing up to that standard. With the Avalanche locking in a spot, only two remain in the West Division.

Just a few minutes ago, I was on YouTube reliving the last three playoff clinches of the 2018-19 season, and they were amazing. April 4, 2019, the Hurricanes clinched for the first time in a decade. That same day, the Avalanche got the one point we needed to clinch, and got the second one in OT. The following day, April 5, the Columbus Blue Jackets won a shootout to get the 16th and last spot remaining. I couldn't help but shake my head when I watched the Jackets video. Why? Well, after clinching that spot, the Jackets shocked the world and swept a 62-win Tampa Bay Lightning team in the opening round. Here it is, two years later, and the Jackets are now officially eliminated from playoff contention after a terrible season. Their elimination came last night via a 3-1 regulation loss to--you guessed it--the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Now I remember that year and thinking, "They're a perennial playoff team now." But in just two years, the Jackets went from the biggest moment in their brief franchise history to...this. The Jackets sit in last place in the Central Division, even the Red Wings are ahead of them. So how did this happen? The three Ts: Turmoil, Trades, and Torts. The Laine trade. Pierre-Luc Dubois was clearly unhappy, refused to give 110%, so he got traded to WPG for Patrik Laine. I and many others thought CBJ won that trade, but Laine regressed. A lot of people blamed Laine, I don't. I think Torts wouldn't let Laine be Laine, because he never had any problems with the Jets. All of that, plus injuries and lack of consistent offense from even known offensive stalwarts such as Cam Atkinson and Oliver Bjorkstrand have played a factor in this embarrassing elimination.

And the story came out days ago that Columbus is expected to fire Torts after this season's over. Oh boy. This is the first time that the Jackets will miss the playoffs since the 2015-16 season.

Today's clinching scenarios:

Hurricanes can clinch a playoff spot with a win or an OT appearance combined with a Stars regulation loss.

Wild can clinch a playoff spot with any of the following:

1. Win
2. Kings regulation loss
3. Reaching OT and the Kings doing the same
4. Reaching OT, a Kings non-regulation win, and a Blues regulation loss

For a look at the complete standings, go to Page 1.
