The first woman to be a sportscaster co-hosting The NFL Today. Also was the co-host of CBS Morning News though her tenure there was very brief and the mother of CNN Reporter Pamela Brown.

A true trailblazer, she also was an avid lover of crafts and get this--she even got involved in the chicken business with Chicken By George :P .

She was featured on The Muppet Show with Rowlf and also as a guest on The $20,000 Pyramid, back when some of the early iterations aired on ABC.

Her colleagues on the NFL Today were former player Irv Cross and Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder.

Jimmy "The Greek" arrived in 1976, one year before the format change.

Legend has it that both Phyllis and "The Greek" did not get along initially, so Brent and "The Greek" filmed their picks segment separately before everyone returned to the set minutes prior to kickoff.

By the time Jayne Kennedy left the show in 1980 and at the same time Phyllis became the First Lady of Kentucky returned, they made up and things changed.

Think about it: If it wasn't for Phyllis George, we wouldn't have the likes of Julie Moran, Willow Bay (remember her?), Maria Sansone (who started out very young), Erin Andrews, Charissa Thompson, and Kristine Leahy.

Oh, and Jayne Kennedy succeeded Phyllis on The NFL Today in the late '70s (while most of us were in diapers) before returning; she was the black Maria Menounos of her day.

Just hear of Willow Bay recently with the Last Dance Documentary. Also, I think Phyllis was the first pageant contestant/titleholder to become a national on-air talent. I don't think there any else before her. Maybe in the local markets but not national. She did open a lot of doors.

Bess Myerson was Miss America 1945
She appeared on I’ve Got A Secret in the 50s and 60s before becoming New York City’s commissioner of consumer affairs
