Ginger Zee's tweet from Friday, March 13 summed it up perfectly--while raising awareness to help women succeed in science:

I consider people who work in the news business--anchors, reporters, meteorologists, etc--to be entertainers rather than trusted purveyors of news & information. This doesn't mean they're undeserving of respect, of course, but they're celebrities and are more akin to actors and actresses than scientists and lawyers. "Weather woman" sounds weird and will only last a year or two before gender-specific identifiers are themselves too deemed offensive and in need of cancelling.

It seems that people who try to dictate how others speak are less concerned with the alleged offensive nature of the language and more concerned with holding power over others' ability to express themselves without fear of stepping on whatever eggshell is wokescold's flavor of the month.

That said, I'd agree that "weather girl" sounds like an Instagram model who was taught to read a teleprompter for a Monterrey variety show. I'll keep using the term "meteorologist."

I prefer calling them meteorologists as well. As for them being consider celebrities, well some of them are uncomfortable being called celebrities. I remember Christi Paul said on a post on Instagram she doesn't consider herself a celebrity. If they wanted to, they would have been models or actresses (some of them had roles in Movies/TV Shows). Also, some of them have competed in pageants (unsure if you consider those who complete in pageants celebrities but that's another topic). Yes, on-air talent have to be entertaining as much as informative because you just can't deliver the news and/or the weather and that's it unless times of a hurricane/severe storms/big news stories.

In fairness, I did like the show Ben hosted with Kellie Pickler. Just too bad it ended because the stations wanted to give Kelly Clarkson a freaking show.
